History

Women’s Council of Southeastern Michigan received it’s charter as a chapter of The Women’s Council of the National Association of Real Estate Brokers in Houston, TX on August 7, 2023.  The history that Detroit has played in both the National Association of Real Estate Brokers (NAREB) and the Women’s Council of the National Association of Real Estate Brokers (WCN) can be traced to the beginnings of both organizations.

NAREB was organized and founded in Tampa, FL, in 1947, with twelve (12) founding members from different states, four of those members were from Detroit, MI.  Among those founders was one woman, Mrs. Nannie Black, who was from Detroit, MI.  In the 1950s, the “Detroit Brokerettes” were formed and laid the foundation for a group of minority women to be supported in real estate.  It was in 1971, in Atlanta, GA, that three women, Daisy Donavan, Detroit, MI, Laura Seale, Brooklyn, NY and Iris Yateman, Indianapolis, IN founded WCN.
